Unit Study: Seeds + Plants

This month our Compass Crate subscription box was themed Seeds + Plants which worked like perfection with what was already going on in our house – starters and seed trays EVERYWHERE!

The month started with Autumn going to the Home Depot’s free monthly kids workshop where she built a plant holder. I often worry about finding the balance she needs with home education but the reality is there are so many resources around us that nurture different aspects of learning, you just have to keep your eyes peeled for them. The Home Depot kids workshop is a fantastic little supplement for her – and it’s a regular daddy-daughter date too.

The girls also planted a fairy garden in a huge plant pot out in our back garden. Everything has blossomed and bloomed like crazy this past month and it’s been really fun to see the changes every day. Autumn gets excited if she sees a bee or butterfly near it. Germination and Pollination have been hot topics lately!

Seeds + Plants is a pretty basic topic which means you won’t struggle to build a curriculum for a unit study – you probably already have some books on your shelf that fit this theme and you might not even realise it. There is also an abundance of learning material on Pinterest – worksheets, projects, experiments etc. (I have a board for every unit study we do.)

Let me know if this is something you’ve studied with your kids. I’d love to hear how it went!
