4 family games we love for a quick game night

Here’s the thing, we’re a house divided when it comes to family games. Some of us (me) are picky and find a lot of games excruciating. Others family members are always up for a game, any game, all the time! Luckily, we’ve found a middle ground and a few games that suit all of us.

For me, I like the pace to be quick enough that there’s no chance to say, “Oh is it my turn?” Let’s keep it moving, people! Sitting down to play a game together shouldn’t feel like a hostage situation!

Next, I also need the games to be simple to explain and learn. This is because by the time everyone’s ready to sit down together I’m already out of energy for the day. And lastly, another important aspect for me is that they’re fun for everyone. It makes losing easier that way. These family games hit all the right notes for me. Bonus that they’re compact and don’t take up much shelf space, and are easy to tote around in my bag if we’re on a road trip and might have a game op.

The Family Card Games we love

If you’re looking for stocking stuffers or small gifts, these are worth keeping your eye on. Card games are affordable, compact, fun, and thoughtful.

Leave me a comment below and let me know if you’ve played any of these, and what your go-to family games are!

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

When it comes to a simple, fast-paced, hilarious card game for 3-8 players, this is it. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza by Dolphin Hat Games is fun for all ages (our youngest player was 6) and guarantees a lot of laughs. There isn’t much to this game other than keeping your wits about you. Once you get into the rhythm of discarding and chanting TACO – CAT – GOAT – CHEESE – PIZZA remembering the actions for gorilla, groundhog, and narwhal is what really counts. Your reflexes will get a workout with this game!

Snag a few of these for gifting because as soon as you play it you’ll want to share the joy. You’ll even want to send it to your family who also didn’t grow up playing games.

The Game

The Game by Pandasaurus is a cooperative, strategic card game that quickly became our go-to at the end of the day after the kids are in bed. We often play a round or two while catching up rather than watching tv.

Play it alone or with up to 6 players and work together as you strategically play all 98 cards in numerical order on 4 discard piles – two piles start at 1 and go up to 100, the other two piles start at 100 and go down to 1. The key to this game is figuring out the best play together without specifically saying which numbers you have in your hand. There is a little bit of a learning curve but this game is very satisfying.

Over Under Ostrich

This is another card game by Dolphin Hat Games that brings the laughs. Be the first to collect all 6 ostriches with different hairstyles by flipping the card and catching it like your hand is an ostrich. Discard the buzzer card onto another player’s ostrich to make them have to collect that hairstyle again. For 2-8 players, this is a perfect game for adults and kids to play around the table. It’s simple and fun.

Happy Salmon

You can count on the creators of Exploding Kittens for games that provide endless entertainment. If Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza and Pit had a baby, it would be something like Happy Salmon. For 3-8 players this game is loud, has actions, along with quickly switching places with players around the table.
